What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have been in use for over 2,000 years. One of the foundations of TCM is the acknowledgment or awareness that every living entity has an innate intelligence of the body. The body’s ability of self-organization and the physiological processes that take place every second of every day is known as “Qi” (pronounced ‘chee’). Qi flows through the body in energy streams known as meridians, which are related to hundreds of points on the skin. These points are known as acupuncture points. Pain or illness can result when blockages occur within the meridians inhibiting the flow of qi.

Acupuncture is the placement of hair-fine needles in the points that correspond to the patient’s condition. The goal of an acupuncture treatment is to renew the healthy flow of qi and restore the body to balance.
